Uganda police are demanding an apology from a local daily that ‘misled’ its readers on the events that unfolded in Jinja town during Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi’s foiled rally.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga expressed dismay on Saturday morning over a headline that claimed one of Hon Amama Mbabazi’s body guards was shot in the leg during the fracas.

Mbabazi on the Wednesday and Thursday had two of his planned rallies in Soroti and Jinja foiled by anti – riot police, treat on grounds that he ignored the electoral commission guidelines.

Mr Enanga rebutted the news story, and clarified that in Jinja, Mbabazi’s consultative meeting was blocked due to lack of alternative routes.

“This was after the Municipal council had booked out Kakindu stadium while Kazimingi Industrial park was a very busy commercial area,” said Enanga.

“At no stage was any person shot and injured during the lawful operation to quell and disperse an unlawful assembly within the Municipality. The Police treat rule of law and every day law abiding choices as its number one priority.”

The Police mouthpiece went on to demand that the newspaper apologizes immediately, retracts and corrects the report.

“The reporters …made very little effort and or attempts to find out the truth since a gun wound victim would have been rushed to the nearest hospital in Jinja.”

During the Jinja battle, the head of Mbabazi’s security team only identified as Aine was arrested while he tried to fight off police officers. He was released shortly afterwards.
