Besigye was arrested from Jinja Road in Kampala where he was leading a procession of hundreds of supporters.
This came against the backdrop of Police chief Gen Kale Kayihura’s threats he would not allow any “lawlessness in the city.”
Police maintain processions in the city disrupt business and traffic which usually lead to destruction of property.
But opposition activists say such rules are aimed at curtailing opposition from enjoying its civil liberties such as right of assembly.

Police are yet to speak out on the arrest.
Youthful FDC supporters have since gathered at the station with some demonstrating their acrobatic skills.

Besigye was picked up this afternoon along Kampala Road as he and his big procession essayed to walk toward Nasser Road where he was slated to hold a rally.
Firing teargas to disperse the rowdy supporters who were forcing their way through police blockades, and Dr Besigye was forced into a waiting Pickup patrol truck together with Kampala Woman MP Hon Nabila Sempala and other FDC leaders.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga said Dr Besigye has not been arrested and that the ongoing outrage was uncalled for.
He told Chimpreports on phone that being held at a police station doesn’t imply that one has been arrested.

“He is at Kiira Road, but does that mean that he has been placed under arrest?” he added before calling for patience.
The development comes only two three days to the general elections, where Dr Besigye will be challenging for the fourth time, incumbent President Yoweri Museveni.
