Parliament Suspends Issuance of Work Permits to Foreign Traders

Trade Minister Amelia Kyambadde

Minister of Trader and Industry, doctor Amelia Kyambadde has revealed that the Immigration Office under the Internal Affairs Ministry has commenced deportation all illegal foreign traders in the country; those whose documents are found lacking.

The Minister made the revelation while appearing before Parliament’s Trade Committee on Monday, noting that this is being done under the ongoing verification exercise of all foreign traders which ends on December 31.

The Trade Committee chaired by MP Kenneth Lubogo was concerned about the growing number of foreigners involved in small scale businesses, including street vending.

They noted that this has greatly affected local traders as they struggle for the same market and yet some of the foreigners entered the country as investors.

The committee to that effect ordered the immigration office to stop issuance of work permits to all foreigners until the verification exercise is complete.

“The directorate of Immigration should suspend issuance of classes D and G work permits to foreign traders intended to do business in Uganda,” the Committee ordered.

They added that “Retail and whole sale trade licenses which expire shall not be renewed no further issuance of trading license of retail to foreign citizens.”

Tougher orders were made against all officials that will be found illegally issuing permits to be held accountable and arrested.

“Should any government officer or agency be caught aiding, corrupting, promoting, allowing illegal traders or any Ugandan found hiding these traders, they shall be arrested.”

“Foreigners with fake documents processed or illegally issued documents to foreign traders shall be deported immediately and the issuers arrested.”
