St. George 0-1 Mamelodi Sundowns
The CAF champions league encounter between Ethiopia’s St.George and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns brought together Uganda Cranes’ first and second choice goalkeepers at different ends of the goal-posts.
Denis Masinde Onyango saved a crucial penalty at the stroke of halftime before Laffor notched an opener past Odongkara as the visiting Mamelodi Sundowns grabbed 3 vital points away from home.
That heroic performance from Uganda’s first choice shot stopper, Onyango, comes in a consecutive week after the player was named on CAF champions league team of the week following another impressive performance in Sundowns’ goalles draw with ES Tunis.
In the game played at Addis Ababa stadium, another Uganda cranes player Yasser Mugerwa, played for St. George coming in as late substitute replacing Assefa in the 77th minute but he could not help his team to at least pick a point at home.
Onyango was facing his former employers.
The shot stopper played for St. George in 2005-6 before a transfer move to Supersport United.
That victory takes the defending champions to 8 points, second in group C, just a point below table toppers ES Tunis with a game to go.
Mamelodi’s next and last game in the group is a home fixture against bottom club AS Vita of DR Congo.
St. George, whose last game in the group is a trip against ES Tunis, remain in 3rd position with 5 points and arguably with no chance of qualifying to the knockout phase due to their disadvantaged Head to head with the Sundowns.
