Court in Ntungamo on Friday acquitted 17 supporters of Former Go-Forward Presidential candidate John Patrick Amama Mbabazi supporters, who were accused of beating NRM supporters in Ntungamo during the 2015 presidential election campaigns.
Ntungamo Grade One Magistrate Lydia Kambedia heard from the prosecution led by State Attorney Jacob Nahurira, that the suspects attacked and assaulted supporters of the then incumbent presidential candidate Yoweri Museveni.
The suspects are Boaz Kumwesiga, Sulait Amanya, Amidu Kamwesiga Alias Kadeti, Alex Sekeba, Rebson Muhangi, Apollo Asingwire, Frank Batemyeto, Ramathan Onzima, Lawrence King Mugabe, Rogers Nduga, Benon Turyamureba, Abudulla Kasajja, Jamir Mutebi , George Sebatindira, Asadu Semakula and Frank Kabari.
These were on 27th January, 2016 charged with eight counts of assault, three counts of malicious damage and causing grievous harm.
Their lawyer, Onesmus Matsiko however, argued that there was no evidence to prosecute his clients any further saying that the charges were politically motivated.
The magistrate Kambedia, concurred with the defense in her ruling, saying the state failed to produce convincing evidence against the accused.
She also pointed out that some suspects like Christopher Aine and Presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi had not been prosecuted, but state decided to pick on individuals who had nothing to do with the said crimes.
Christopher Aine, the then head of Mbabazi’s security had been included on charge sheet before it was amended.
