Men: City Oilers 73-64 KIU Titans
With a last hour change of the venue, Mandy Juruni’s City Oilers managed to answer back the critics with a hard fought victory against the KIU titans in a thrilling game on Friday evening.
The game that slated to be played at YMCA outdoor court but later Moved to Lugogo MTN Arena got everyone at the edge of the seat up to the very end.
Oilers’ Stephen Omony led the scoring charts with 17 points while Titans’ Michael Bwanga notched 16.
This was KIU’s first loss of the season after previous convincing wins against Ndejje University Angels, JKL dolphins, Sharing, Our Saviour and UCU.
The victory is Oilers 4th of the season as the defending champions defeated UPDF, Our Saviour and Nkumba earlier.
Their only two defeats were against UCU and Betway Power in the league opener.
Oilers’ Coach Mandy Juruni told ChimpReports after the game that the victory is to bring back morale to the team.
“We mentally prepared ourselves, we have been practicing all along, I can see there’s a lot of improvement in terms of mental toughness,” he said.
“Today we created a lot of chances; we just did not score as much but at least we played a role that everyone had to play.”
“We have not been showing a lot of will of recent but I believe we can play better, because there is a lot of improvement from the first game and this win is going to bring back a lot of confidence and morale back.” added the victorious manager.
KIU titans’ Michael Bwanga got the game underway drawing the first blood with a jump shot outside the paint to give the titans a 3 point lead at 8:40.
Their lead was however short lived as Okello and Landry reacted in time to put the Oilers in the driving seat, with the former collecting 8 points as City Oilers took a lead of 33-26 in the first quarter.
Back in the second quarter, Titans limited the Oilers to only 12 points but they also lost stamina going forward as they only managed 13 points.
The scoreboard read 33-26 in favor of the Oilers at halftime break.
It was in the third quarter where Titans found actual rhythm with Kazungu scoring 6 to add on Bwanga’s 5 points as they reduced the deficit to only 4 points with the quarter ending 49-45.
In the last 10 crucial minutes, Titans showed some sparks of brilliance tying the score on two occasions; 52-52 at 9:12 after Soro’s 3 point jump shot and later, Chris Omanye’s 3 pointer at 7:52 to tie it at 57-57.
But the defending champions regained control of situation with Umony getting 4 points in the decisive minutes and Enabu sealed the victory with a 2 point lay up to end the score at 73-52.
In the first game of the day, Jamila Nansinkombi hit 16 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists to guide Boniface Okello’s JKL lady dolphins to a 75-48 victory past the Javon Ladies.
The 2017 National Basketball league season continues this Sunday with 12 teams in action at YMCA outdoor court, Wandegeya.
