The final squad that will represent Uganda at the forthcoming Zone V Volleyball championship has been named.
National team coach Nason Bwesigye released the thirteen man squad that will play at this year’s Africa Zone V tournament in Kigali, Rwanda slated for July 21-27.
The team comprises of players with vast experience including Dickens Otim who will skipper the team.
Otim who plays for Sport-S in the league will captain the team with George Aporu named his assistant.
Daudi Okello who plays his professional volleyball in Bulgaria and most remembered for causing a standoff of the league last year is also part of the team that will travel to Rwanda.
Cuthbert Malinga and John Bosco Opendi who were suspended by Uganda Volleyball Federation have been pardoned and will be part of the team.
Although the ban stays on for the players in the league and national championship, for the nation we had to give them a last chance as a (UVF) board. It’s not entirely the players to blame. So they deserved a second chance. I had a lengthy talk with them (players) and they have promised to do things the right way,” UVF president Hadijjah Namanda said.
The duo was suspended for featuring in two clubs (Sport-S in Uganda and Kenya Ports Authority in Kenya) at the same time.
The team departs for Rwanda on Thursday ahead of the tournament that serves off on 21st July with about 12 countries confirming participation.
Otim Dickens (Captain), Aporu George, (Assistant Captain), Okumu Smith, Opendi John Bosco, Gayi Albert, Emma Kato, Kitosi Roni, Malinga Cuthbert, Daudi Okello,Atama Savior, Omedo Isaac, Isiagi Elias and Elanyu Emma.
