Museveni Roots for Container Depots to Ease Cargo Movement on L. Victoria

President Yoweri Museveni has stressed the need to establish big internal container depots near the City of Kampala in Central Uganda as well as in Tororo and Jinja Municipalities in Eastern Uganda in order to make easier to handle large volumes of cargo around the Lake Victoria Zone.

Maersk Group is an international shipping company, which is based in Denmark that has been in the transport business for 100 years and owns about 1,000 ships that operate around the world.

“Uganda will soon be involved in the construction of cheaper and modern transport system to scale down road transport system. This requires a number of offloading points around the Lake Victoria region. The Tororo outlet will be able to handle traffic from Kenya and South Sudan,” he said.

The President, therefore, instructed the Ministry of Works and Transport as well as other line Ministries, to liaise with the Maersk Group and move to the site in order to analyze fully other strategic outlets possible in a short period of time.

Mr. Museveni further emphasized the importance of having a goods outlet around Lake Victoria adding that it is advantageous especially when the water level of the lake is stable at a depth of around 12.67 metres, which would provide adequate conditions for the operation of the pier’s landing site.
