Museveni Orders Extension of Sim Card Registration

Museveni is in Kagoma for 2 days

Barely a week after the Uganda Communications Commission ordered deactivation of unregistered sim cards, viagra President Museveni has directed reopening of the verification exercise and extended the cut off deadline to August.

On Friday last week, more about unregistered sim cards were deactivated prompting many Ugandans including Parliamentarians to complain over the limited time given to them to register.

The president in a meeting he had with MPs of the NRM caucus was asked to weigh in on the matter and he agreed to the extension of the deadline .

“Some MPs appealed for more time for simcard registration despite passing of the earlier deadline,”Museveni said in a tweet on Monday evening.
“I have agreed that the new deadline will be respected.”

According to the presidential directive the new deadline for sim card registration will be August 30,2017.

On Thursday, parliament passed a resolution advising the Information and ICT minister Frank Tumwebaze to extend the registration for a year because many people had not registered yet.

However, in response on Friday, minister Frank Tumwebaze said that a largest number of sim card holders had already registered.
“The overall objective of this exercise is purely to provide national security safeguards,”Tumwebaze told journalists adding that unregistered sim cards would be deactivated.

Museveni now says he asked the Ministry for ICT and UCC to allow the window.

“I ask Ugandans to take this exercise seriously, “he warned.
