President Yoweri Museveni has this afternoon launched a fresh countrywide registration exercise for the ruling National Resistance Movement [NRM] membership.
This new exercise is expected to produce a new NRM national register, ahead of the 2016 general elections.
This follows the party’s lost battle against its former Secretary General Hon Amama Mbabazi to have him produce the party’s old register.
Mbabazi allegedly withheld it after the NRM refused to repay the loan funds that were used in its compilation.
While Gulu district today, Museveni launched the new registration exercise, with his party card being produced at the same function at Kaunda Grounds.
Museveni encouraged the NRM members countrywide to register at their respective branch offices in their districts.
The ruling party’s decision to embark on a new register came after they refused to pay shs 5 billion demanded by Mbabazi’s daughter Nina Mbabazi, who is said to have spearheaded the 2010 compilation exercise.
Mbabazi maintains he and his daughter are not sitting on the Party roll.
In March, the NRM launched its internal elections roadmap leading into its primaries and next year’s general elections
The roadmap among others, spelt out updating its membership register, which according to Secretary General Justine Kasule Lumumba, is delayed by more than a month.
