President Yoweri Museveni has praised the late Mzee Boniface Byanyima as a pioneer of development during and post-independence Uganda.
Museveni in a speech read by Foreign Affairs Minister, for sale Sam Kuteesa said Byanyima also saved his family in two difficult times that he will never be in position to forget.
According to the President, page in 1960 his parents had failed to raise his school fees and he was consequently chased from school.
Mzee Kaguta however managed to take the son (Museveni) to Byanyima who was a respected teacher for help.
“When I was chased out of school in 1960’s over school fees, about it Mzee Byanyima took me and my father to the headmaster and stood surety. I was allowed to continue with studies and my dad later brought the school fees after some weeks,” Museveni said.
Museveni added that Mzee Byanyima again saved his family in 1980’s when the UPC government was persecuting his family. Museveni’s mother took refuge at Byanyima’s home up to when she was smuggled to Rwanda.
“The UPC government persecuted my family in the 80s and it was again Byanyima who kept my mother safe until she sneaked out,” he added.
It should be noted that Museveni launched the bush war in 1981 when his family members including father and mother were in the country.
According to historians, radicals in the UPC government wanted Museveni’s family to be dealt with but President Milton Obote kept on reigning on them.
Meanwhile Museveni also praised Byanyima as the man who introduced modern farming in Ankole and also played a big role in education.
