Museveni 18-Million Hoe Project Kicks Off

A high ranking East African Community (EAC) Secretariat officer has passed on this Monday evening after a mild illness she suffered in Kampala a few days ago.

Her colleagues in Tanzania informed Chimpreports that Ms Wafungwa breathed her last at around 4pm at Nairobi Hospital in Kenya.

Sources revealed that the deceased suffered a short illness in Kampala over the weekend while she and her crew were here to prepare for the EAC Election Observers team.

He colleagues described Wafungwa as a “very very powerful lady in the integration” who will be greatly missed.

Government has launched a countrywide distribution of hand hoes in fulfillment of President Yoweri Museveni’s promise to provide 18 million hoes to 6 million households across the nation.

The launch took place Monday in Terego County, pills Arua  district and was presided over by Prime  Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda.

Speaking during the colourful function attended by many people, Dr Rugunda said President Museveni is a leader who keeps and fulfils his promises.

While meeting locals in  Terego in November last year, people  told President Museveni that they were keen to grow crops to feed themselves and improve their household incomes,  but lacked key inputs such as hoes.

The President then promised that Government would provide them.

“We pleased to be rolling out this national programme of providing this key farm implement today, starting from Terego, Arua district,” said Rugunda.

The Premier said the hoe is a key tool used by majority of Ugandans, and complements mechanised farming using tractors.

The hoes project recently attracted criticism from sections of the public with many saying the hoe would not modernise agriculture or empower famers realise high yield products.

“Most of us are here today because of the hand hoe. We used it to grow crops for food and for sale. There is no contradiction to modernisation of Agriculture. The hoe is very important,” he added.

The Prime Minister also used the occasion, wearing his hat as a member of the NRM Central Executive Committee to drum up support for President Yoweri Museveni and NRM party flag bearers for the forthcoming elections.

“Without a doubt, come 18th February, all votes from here should go President Museveni and the NRM flag bearers to ensure that the country continues on the path of steady progress.”

Earlier, while meeting the district leadership, Dr Rugunda hailed Arua for being a shining example of a well functioning municipality.
