MP Latif Ssebaggala Abandons Mbabazi for Besigye

Kawempe North MP Latif Ssebaggala Sengendo has defected from the Go Forward camp to Dr Kizza Besigye’s side – just days after being listed as one of the key strategists of former premier Amama Mbabazi’s campaign taskforce.

The opposition Democratic Party lawmaker said in a statement on Monday that he chose to throw his weight behind Besigye because the FDC candidate is the only strong opposition leader who espouses the emancipation of Ugandans from what he describes as the NRM ‘dictatorship.’

However, more about the latest development implies some individual MPs are uncomfortable backing Mbabazi.

Ssebaggala said he was overwhelmed by the people’s support of “my decision to back a candidate who has proved to be more popular than the rest amongst opposition.”

He also clarified that his judgment does not in any way imply that other opposition presidential candidates are not good enough “but the situation in which we are now requires a strong united front against the incumbent amidst all odds.”

Ssebaggala added: “I passionately appeal to all Ugandans yearning for change to put our differences aside and get united for the change we deserve and need and therefore national interest and the betterment of our dear country should take precedence over our personal interests in this fight to remove the dictatorship that has for so many years oppressed and completely taken power away from the people of Uganda which I strongly believe is the core reasons Mr. Besigye stands for. It’s for these reasons I have decided to fully support Dr. Kizza Besigye.”

The MP assured that he, side effects “together with my campaign team vow to fully campaign for him and see that I can add my experience and support to his already existing enormous support and influence the electorate positively towards this effect.”
