The State Minister for Higher Education, John Chrysostom Muyingo, has given the Kabale district Education officer, Kenneth Sabiiti Baabo, an ultimatum of one week, to furnish his office with a report on the functioning of all boards of governors (BOGs), in all schools in the district.
Minister Muyingo made the directive over the weekend, while speaking at St Theresa Girls Vocational School, during celebrations to mark the school’s Patron Saints Day.
The minister’s directive followed reports that some schools in the district do not have fully constituted, and properly recruited boards of governors, which he said contravenes the Education Act of 2008.
Muyingo observed that the BOGs which are the supreme governing bodies of the schools are supposed to operating at all times.
When our reporter contacted the district Education officer, Kenneth Baabo — who was not at the function — about the directive, he said that while the minister might have heard that some schools in the municipality were without fully functioning BOGs, this didn’t mean that all the schools in the district don’t have them.
Baabo said he would respond to the minister’s directive but only after he puts it in writing.
