Mentally Ill Man Drowns Self in Lake Bunyonyi

A 39-year-old mentally ill man has Tuesday morning drowned himself in Lake Bunyonyi as he was being taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for medical attention.

The deceased, identified as Alex Muhwezi, was a resident of Mugyera, Bufundi sub-county in Rubanda district.

According to Ezra Karuhize who witnessed the incident, Muhwezi jumped out of a vehicle they were moving in.

“We had reached Kitooma village in Rubaya sub-county, Kabale district at around 10am when jumped into the lake,” said Karuhize who was also among the people accompanying Muhwezi.

Karuzire revealed that the deceased developed mental illness three days ago, after which they planned to take him to the hospital.

Dickens Bindeba, the Kabale District Police Commander confirmed the incident, saying that his body was later retrieved from the waters and a post-mortem was done.

Bindeba further told ChimpReports that the body was given to the relatives to give him a decent burial.
