Mbarara’s Highway Robbery Kingpin Netted in Kampala

Just hours to the polling day, symptoms Parliamentary candidate on independent ticket for Buyanja Constituency in Kibaale District Godfrey Muhonge Kasanga has been disqualified from the race by the Independent Electoral Commission.

According to a letter in reference to a meeting of the commission conducted on the 12th of February 2016, price the decision was reached to disqualify Muhonge.

The letter reads; This is to inform you that at its meeting held on the 12th February 2016, under MIN. COMP. /2016, the commission upon hearing Mr. Byenkya Robert, Mr. Muhonge Godfrey Kasanga and his counsel Mr. Peter Ssetimba and further guided by the handwriting expert report dated 8th February referenced FS/D 047/2016 disqualified candidature of Mr. Muhonge Gogfrey Kasanga on ground that his nomination was obtained in contravention of s. 11 (i) (c)  of the parliamentary elections act thus in accordance with s. 13 of the parliamentary Elections Act.

The disqualification follows the fogged signature of one person out of 100 who signed for him upon his nomination.

Muhonge on Tuesday evening winded up his his  campaign successfully but was Wednesday morning shocked upon receiving a disqualification letter from Kibaale District Electoral Commission which was signed by Eng. Badru Kiggundu.

The candidate is now threatening to petition the relevant authorities to seek postponement, the Buyanja county elections.

He is also concerned by the delay of a letter to be delivered to him and yet it was issued on 12th February.

Our reporter spoke to Eric Gemei, the Kibaale District returning officer who confirmed the disqualification.

Godfrey Muhonge Kasanga has been battling the incumbent Hon Matia Kasaija of the NRM, independents Vincent Irumba and Birungi Resty as well as Francis Mivure of the FDC.
Police in Kampala has pinned down the suspected head of the serial robbers around western Uganda who have been diverting passengers on the way and robbing them.

The assailants were rampant on the Mbarara-Masaka road. Police says these have been diverting vehicles including buses and beating up passengers before fleeing with their money and belongings.

The group is also being linked to the recent murder of the Jussy Coaches’ manager in Mbarara, more about who was shot dead about a week ago.

Elly Nuwagira the suspected head of this group was arrested along the Mityana Kampala road.

Police in Mbarara says the arrest was a positive result of the liaison between them and colleagues in Kampala.

Nuwagira, who was injured in a car collision during arrest, was netted together with three of his suspected group members, one of them a woman whose names were yet to be released.

Mbarara’s OC CID Taban Chiriga said investigations are still ongoing to apprehend the rest of the gang members

Nuwagira is being admitted at Mulago Referral Hospital where he is nursing mirror injuries.
