Mbarara: UPDF Officer Steals 18M, Survives Lynching

Police in Mbarara has in custody an army officer on allegations that he snatched Shs. 18million Shs from a woman in Mbarara town.

Police says Edgar Tugume attached to Makenke Barracks grabbed Rita Katusime’s bag and stole the money on 4th July 2016.

Ms Katusiime while speaking to Chimpreports at Mbarara Police Station said she had just returned from withdrawing the money from DFCU Bank Mbarara and that the officer grabbed her bag at her gate.

She says she made an alarm and residents arrested Edgar and was terribly beaten before recovering the stolen money.

Police arrived at the scene in time to save the UPDF officer from being lynched by the angry residents.

He also thanked Rita and residents’ courage to arrest the errant officer and promised that he will be punished in accordance with the laws.

The case was registered at Mbarara police station under CRB1714/2016.
