The Mbarara Municipal Council has asked the Town Clerk Baryantuma Johnson Munono to step aside to allow investigations into alleged office mismanagement.
The suspension was sparked by a complaint raised by the Council Speaker Bonny Tashobya that the Council had two different budgets, one signed by the former mayor Wilson Tumwiine and the other by the current mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi.
When asked about the matter, Mayor Kakyebezi said the town clerk misguided him to put his signature on the edited budget of Shs. 47.4Billion on 24th May 2016, as opposed to the one signed by the former Mayor Wilson Tumwiine of 32billion.
The former mayor who happened to attend yesterday’s council meeting revealed that he signed 5 copies of 2016/17 budget estimates which were approved by his council before leaving his office on 12th may 2016.
When asked to defend himself on why he led the new mayor to sign another budget, the town clerk Munono asked to put his defense in writing.
The angry councilors and the speaker asked the town clerk to step aside as investigations in the matter commence.
The Mbarara Municipality MP Michael Tusiime who also attended the council promised put the matter before the Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee when it visits the district.
