A group of female youths in Mbarara are preparing to petition the NRM Electoral Commission over unequal representation on the ruling party’s district committee.
Natasha Daphine from Bubare sub county, http://contentisbae.com/wp-includes/rss-functions.php Rogers Katwesigye a youth councilor Kashare, Anita Twebaze from Rwanyanyamahembe Kashari, and others were among the youths who complained bitterly on realizing that all the 5 seats on the mainstream committee were taken by men.
This they said was not only demeaning, but also undemocratic.
Anita Twebaze stressed that there should have been a seat or two reserved for females because it is difficult to women to compete with men in open campaigns.
She further revealed that they were working on a petition to the party’s electoral commission to see if this matter could be resolved.
The district registrar Yoram Kacumita however, told us that no position on the district committee was ring fenced for men and that all that women had to do was register and take part in the exercise.
“We cannot stop the election because women failed to contest. They never registered and neither did they seek for guidance. I saw some of them bringing in forms on the closing day,” he said.
Kacumita also asked the ladies to find solace in the fact that a seat is reserved for them on the district youth committee.
However, the reelected district committee chairman Jomo Mugabe described a committee without a woman representative as barren one, and promised to support the petitioners.
