Business in Mbarara today was paralyzed by bodaboda riders who stormed the Municipal Council complaining about what they called poor allocation of boda stages .
Tension begun yesterday evening when some of the boda riders at Independence Stage learnt that Mbarara mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi gave away their stage to their colleagues who shifted from Old Central Market, where a new market mall is under construction.
This morning police was forced to butt in and disperse the rowdy operators in a scuffle that left 3 people injured and admitted.
The bodaboda riders claim the mayor Kakyebezi was bribed with Shs. 4million to give away the independence stage to the other group.
The demonstrating riders while speaking to media through their chairman James Arinaitwe asked President Yoweri Museveni to give them an Executive Director to run Mbarara Municipal Council saying that the mayor had failed them.
However, when asked to comment on the matter, Kakyebezi denied taking a bribe from any one and promised to meet and iron out the matter with the rival groups.
For security purposes, the DPC Mbarara Jaffar Magyezi closed off the disputed stage and asked the riders to be operating elsewhere pending a resolution.
Kakyebezi revealed that construction of the new 3 storied market will last about 2 years, after which all vendors will be moved there.
Mbarara town clerk Edward Lwanga said the market mall will cost 6.5 million dollars (UGX 22bn), a loan project from African Development Bank under the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Project (MATIP).
