Mbarara Councilors Furious as Town Clerk Bans End-of-Year Parties

Children admitted at the Mulago Cancer Institute were Tuesday relieved of a portion of their agony when they received Christmas presents from a group of Good Samaritans.

The children’s ward had sounds of cheer as kids ran around with toys and balloons in addition to playing with mimics of cartoon character ‘Mickey Mouse’. Despite being the festive season, dosage such a joy could otherwise be unaffordable given the scourge they are battling.


The courtesy visit was organized by Dr. Drew Ddembe a Ugandan oncologist based in Australia in conjunction with ‘Friends of Mulago’ and Aikan, link a Human Resource consultancy in Uganda.

“Many people join their families to celebrate Christmas but these children are bed ridden and incapable of merry making. We thought the need of cheering them up and get them to get a feel of Christmas, website like this ” Moreen Mwagale, one of the organizers told Chimpreports.

Among the gifts presented to the children were; toys, balloons, soap, sugar and edibles like biscuits, soda, milk and crisps.
The few of the kids who could afford walking cut the cake amid excitement.


Ms. Mwagale said that this is the second time Friends of Mulago are reaching out to these cancer stricken children.
“We ensured that we get them things that excite them to make their Christmas memorable given their situation,” she added.

The caretakers who spoke to Chimpreports were equally happy and gratified towards this kind gesture.

Mutegeki Solomon’s son has been admitted for 3 months following a swollen neck, cheek. She was later told her child had cancer of the blood.


“He’s happy and thrilled by the cartoons and the toy he was given. At least this will engage him from time to time. Am also happy about these visitors.”

Another parent, Saul Nabwire said that these occassional visits help them get through tough situations especially getting money.

His son was referred to Mulago from Buikwe with a swelling on the left side of his waist.

“Upon diagnosis of cancer, the doctors prescribed 5 doses so we were told to come here regulary for the next dose. However, while I was away from home, the person in charge of bringing him skipped the dose and his situation worsened,” narrated Nabwire.

He appreciates the Cancer Institute and the medics whom he said have been helpful.
Councilors in Mbarara Municipality have attacked the Town Clerk for denying them an end-of-year party.

The angry councilors raised the concern yesterday during their last meeting to evaluate the work done in the municipality in the closing year.

Town clerk Barintuma Munono was branded a dictator by the councilors, approved for scrapping off all end-of-year parties during his time in office.

Councilor Ntengye Asiimwe who has been in the council for the last 20 years said the town clerk was trying to reverse the tradition of the council that has exited long before his arrival.

Councilors told off the Clerk that the party is not just about dancing and getting drunk, salve but also to appreciate the work of the staff and council members which would motivate them to do better in the coming year.

This year’s party, the councilors argued would be specially to welcome the new divisions of Biharwe, Nyakayojo and Kakika which were added onto the Municipality this year.

The meeting turned rowdy with councilors shouting on top of their lungs, which forced the speaker Muzamilu Sekajja to urge the Town Clerk to set the party for December 31st.

Mr Balintuma however, stood his ground informing the house that the council was not in a financial position to fund such merriment, when a number of projects have not been implemented.
