The officer in-charge of Criminal Investigation Investigations at Mbale Central Police Station, Onesmus Mwesigye, has been sent on leave on allegations that he is engaged in corrupt practices and mishandling of cases.
Dated July 31, a letter signed by Police Director of Human Resource Administration, Moses Balimwoyo, indicates that Mwesigye and Sgt Charles Were, all from the lands desk, have been ordered to report to Police Professional Standards Unit in Kampala.
“They have been suspended to allow investigations into the matter. Not until then, we cannot confirm whether the allegations are false or true,” said Elgon Police spokesperson, Suwed Manshur.
Mansur added that the whole land desk at Mbale CPS has also been disbanded.
“The regional CID has been ordered to deploy new staff as the head office makes new arrangement on land management desk, which will be country wide,” he said.
The action comes hot on heels of complaints by area residents that police officers mismanage cases and solicit bribes.
