MASINDI: Police Speak Out on ‘Unfortunate’ Shooting of UPDF Major

Investigations have kicked off into circumstances under which Maj. Erasmus Tinkamarire, order 45 was shot dead at the Masindi RDC offices last night.

According to the police spokesman AIGP Asan Kasingye, there on Monday, price the RDC’s office was broken into by unknown assailants taking away computers and flash discs.

“From this background, the police and prisons decided to deploy at the building, which also houses officers in charge of prisons, the RDC, his deputy, DISO, the UPDF Zonal Pensions Officer and other officers in Masindi,” Kasingye told this website.

He explained that on Thursday night, Maj. Tinkamarire a Zonal Pensions Officer in the UPDF who was returning from a nearby bar with his girlfriend at around 2230hrs to pick his laptop from his office at the same building.

 “He parked his motorcycle DFM 094 and went for a short call. At the toilet a Prisons warder, a one   Arumadri Musa was standing guard and he mistook him for a thug and a scuffle started. “

According to Kasingye, the warder tried to arrest the plain clothed UPDf officer whom he thought was a thug whereas the latter also thought Arumadri was a thug.

In the scuffle,Maj. Tinkamarire was shot in the chest and died instantly.

Kasingye regretted the incident as unfortunate.

Police revealed in a later statement that the shooter was arrested and is in Police custody at Masindi District Police headquarters, while the body of the deceased was transported to Masindi Hospital for post mortem analysis and further burial arrangements.

Also a District security team comprising of Deputy Artillery Commander, DPC, District CID Officer, Division Intelligence Officer, and OC Prisons, is jointly investigating the matter, to establish the exact sequence of events, as well as review the security measures at the District Headquarters to help guard against such risks of casualties.
