Maroons Hopeful of a Better Second Leg

He said that the verification team will comprise of representatives from Bonyoro- Kitara Kingdom, Local Government, and relevant Central Government officials.

Dr Rugunda’s trip to Kyangwali followed a petition to President Yoweri Museveni by sections of displaced families.

“President Yoweri Museveni does not want any Ugandan to be mistreated in any way. He wants every Ugandan to live in peace in his country. The President does not want any Ugandan to be a refugee in his own country,” the Prime Minister added.

The internal displacement problem in Kyangwali stems from a dispute over the boundaries separating Kyangwali Refugee Settlement and land available for communities surrounding it.

Families reportedly bought land adjacent to the Refugee Settlement, only to be told later that the land they bought lay in the Refugee Settlement.

Subsequently, they were ordered to vacate the said land, a move they have continued to resist.

The land in question was given to Government for settlement of refugees and the surrounding population by Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom.

Prime Minister Rugunda thanked Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom for generously giving land to settle refugees and local people.

The Prime Minister was accompanied on the trip by representatives from Bunyoro-Kitara Kingdom, area Members of Parliament, Hoima District leadership, the Permanent Secretary Office of the Prime Minister, Christine Guwatudde Kintu, and other government officials.
