Police in Kabale are holding a 34 year old man for vandalizing road signage and equipment.

Mohamad Monday, a resident of Rwakaraba in Northern Division, Kabale Municipality was arrested on Tuesday afternoon while at his workplace at Esso Corner in Central Division.

Emmanuel Ngirabakunzi, the Kabale Municipality Engineer says Monday was nabbed red-handed with guard rails by municipality works officials.

Ngirabakunzi says the operation that led to the arrest was opened in response to the increasing disappearance of metallic road signs along municipality roads.

Under the operation, the officials made impromptu inspections to all black smiths and scrap dealers in the municipality.

The suspect was found, according to Ngirabakunzi, with numerous guard rails hidden at his workshop.

Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi region says Monday was found flattening one of the stolen guard rails to make source pans out of it.

The police also found tools that the suspect used to vandalize the road signage.

He is currently held at Kabale Police Station awaiting arraignment before court.

On his defense, Monday said that although he was caught red handed with the guard rails, he didn’t steal them.

He claims his boss only he identified as Diriisa could be having knowledge about guard rails.

Vandalism of road signs especially along Ntungamo-Kabale-Katuna road and Kabale-Rubanda-Kisoro roads has been a major cause of concern amongst local authorities and UNRA.
