Museveni used Tanzania in the 1970s as his base for recruiting combatants from Uganda who would later form the nucleus of the NRA that eventually captured power in 1986.
The support of fallen Tanzanian leader Julius Nyerere was pivotal in enabling Museveni’s rise to power.
The CCM has since then maintained a strong bond with President Museveni and NRM.
CCM Mass Communication Director Daniel Chongolo said in a statement on Monday that his party received “with great joy results of the just-concluded elections in Uganda.”
Museveni defeated his seven opponents with 60 percent of the total vote count.
Regional observers declared the election free and fair but protested delayed voting in some areas in the central region.
Chongolo said as a “sister country we have been following the entire process with keen interest and were confident that the NRM under Chairman Yoweri Kaguta Museveni would emerge triumphant. It is therefore our great pleasure to congratulate president-elect Museveni and our brothers and sisters of the NRM on this resounding victory.”
He further said CCM and NRM have “deep historic and fraternal relations. Having gone through a similar process we are confident that the excellent relations that our two parties enjoy will be further strengthened in our common bid to meet the aspirations of our two peoples.”
More congratulatory messages have since come from President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, the Russian Federation, South Sudan’s Salva Kiir and Rwandan leader, Paul Kagame among others.
