Whoever thought the new Tanzanian President John Pombe Magufuli would stop at scrapping of Independence Day celebrations to save money should think twice.
The latest from the Tanzanian presidency is that Magufuli has ordered all government institutions not send out printed Christmas and New Year cards this year.

Government officials were further warned that whoever intends to print the cards should do so at one’s personal cost.
Magufuli’s austerity measures have since won him praises in Tanzania and across the region.
Sworn in on November 5, Magufuli recently banned travel of government officials to foreign countries, saying embassies should represent the country.
The presidency said the money earmarked for festive season cards should pay creditors for services provided to government or sent to key areas such as health.
