The senior officer succumbed to injuries in the evening of the same day according to a source on the front line.
“We unfortunately lost our great commander yesterday evening. Injuries sustained during a fight earlier in the day worsened and took him,” a source in the SPLA-IO told this reporter on Wednesday morning.
Fighting resumed in Upper Nile which is the second oil richest state after Unity, on Thursday. Rebel forces who claimed to have been provoked by the government troops are trying to take control of Malakal.
The control of Malakal has exchanged hands between the two groups for more than three times and each was characterized by loss of lives and other war atrocities.
Machar who is currently in South Africa for a special health checkup after serious illness suffered from exhaustion while walking from South Sudan to Democratic Republic of Congo, ordered his commanders to restart the assault on government forces under President Salva Kiir two weeks ago.
Machar and Kiir fell out again in July this year after a deadly clash at the presidential palace in Juba that resulted to the death of 300 elite bodyguards of the two.
