Voting is underway in Kyadondo East Constituency as locals elect their Member of Parliament in the heated by-election.

Most polling stations were swarmed by hundreds of voters who were eager to cast their ballots.

Chimp Corps in the area say the better part of voting materials were available by 6:00am.

The voting exercise is being held under very tight security.

Heavily-armed police personnel and anti-riot teargas trucks are visible in the area.

Police spokesperson Asan Kasingye reassured that the force “shall ensure law and order in all the 93 polling stations in the constituency.”

He said the “constituency has been zoned into nine sectors to ease our operations” and each of these sectors will be commanded by an officer of the rank of ASP and above.

These officers will be supported by specialized units and other security agencies.

“We shall ensure motorized and foot patrols, before, during and after the elections.”

Independent Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine, who was accompanied by his wife Barbie, cast his ballot around 9:00am at Magere Polling Station.

The stakes remain so high in this by-election with FDC giving its all to avoid losing its stronghold to the ruling party or Bobi Wine.

The opposition’s honchos on Monday stormed Kyadondo to rally support for Apollo Kantinti whose election was recently nullified by court.

Bobi Wine, a popular musician in the country, remains a big force to reckon with as his music relates with the needs of the common man.

He has branded himself as fighter of the common man’s interests and occasionally showed support for Dr Kizza Besigye.

President Museveni also camped in the area to mobilise support for NRM candidate Sitenda Ssebalu.

Mr Museveni called upon the drivers and cyclists to support Ssebalu.

“I fought the war and chased your enemies. I now command you to go and do your roles and also look for votes for Ssebalu,” he observed.

“For all these years, Wakiso district has been voting for the opposition. Out of 9 MPS from Wakiso district, NRM has only 2. However, the Government has constructed roads, made water accessible and Kitezi water source is going to be boosted. The Government will restructure Kasangati Health Centre and support the people with Operation Wealth Creation programmes,” Museveni reiterated.

The President urged the wananchi to vote for Sitenda Ssebalu, the NRM Candidate, to ensure quicker government service delivery to their areas.
