Lawyer Nicholas Opiyo

Hearing of the case where 19 people are accused of attacking Gulu Police Station and Onapit Barracks before Makindye General Court, drugs didn’t proceed as planned yesterday, as the accused persons brought on board two more lawyers to defend them.

The two lawyers are Nicholas Opiyo and Steven Ssali Ssenkeezi. These upon filing formal proof of instructions from the accused persons are going to join Maj Asha Patra who has been the only defense counsel handling this matter.

Appearing yesterday before the court martial, Council Nicholas Opiyo revealed, “We received instructions from accused persons Eng Openjuru Howard and Opiyo Thomas (to join the defense). We pray that the prosecution provides us with all relevant documents they intend to rely on in this matter before the next court sitting”

State prosecutor Major Raphael Mugisha promised to produce more witness in the next sitting.

Court martial chairman Lt Gen Andrew Gutti adjourned the further hearing of this case to 7th February.

Prosecution alleges that the accused with others at large on 27th May 2016 with intent to prejudice security of the Republic of Uganda infiltrated the Defense forces at Opit Army detach in Gulu district and  Gulu Central Police station, causing the death of Private Odong Alphonse Ojara, Okullo Haggai.
