The Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and antiquities on Friday launched the Kisizi Falls Tourism Site in Rukungiri district.
Kisizi falls is a famous place in history, where young women that conceived before marriage would be taken and thrown to death over the cliff.
Hon Kiwanda handed over the development site of the falls to the Management of Kisiizi Hospital who were the masterminds of it being turned into a tourism site.
The site has been developed with support from the South Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the United Nations World Tourism Organization.
“I am emboldened by the vision of the hospital management to lead the development of the Kisiizi falls as a premium tourist attraction. Transforming the attraction from its raw and natural state to its present form has attracted many visitors even without promotion” he said.
According to Edwin Muzahura the Uganda Tourism Board Marketing Manager, the development of Kisiizi Falls is in line with their agenda to unlock the tourism potential of the country and attract more tourists to come into the country not only for the nature visits but also for medical and educational tourism.
“I challenge the local governments to continue identifying and protecting tourist attractions for investment. The competitiveness of these sites can only be assured if we do not pollute them with other competing economic use, securing adequate land for investment and facilitating these areas with infrastructure,” said Muzahura.
“Kisiizi is a standalone attraction, bearing its history of the Banyakigezi intolerance with unsanctioned marriages; it reminds us of the harsh and primitive punishments of the time but strengthens our traditional values of the sanctity of marriage.”
