Speaking afterwards, the chairperson elect Niwagaba blamed the “death” of the chamber of commerce on its national leadership, at the helm of which is President Olive Zaituni Kigongo and her board of directors. These he accused of neglecting district chamber offices while engaging in politics.

Mrs Kigongo is currently facing competition from businessman Andrew Rugasira, who terms his candidacy for the top position as a ‘patriotic duty.’

At the Kabale event, Niwagaba urged the leaders to work hard to promote and protect the interests of the business community, particularly its members who are represented in all sectors of the economy.

He said that they will put much focus on advocating for appropriate economic policies and interventions that encourage a favorable business and investment climate, and working with its members to enhance their capacity to grow and run efficiently.
