The Inspector General of Police, Gen. Kale Kayihura has fired the Commander of Land Police Protection Unit (LPPU), Senior Superintendent Charles Mutungi.
An order from Kayihura on Tuesday evening sent to all units, directors, heads of departments and special units, removed SSP Mutungi from the position and replaced him with SCP Christine Nanding.
“I have appointed SCP Christine Nanding as Commandant Land Protection Unit (LPPU). SSP Charles Mutungi to be sent on a course (next intermediate course),” part of the letter said.
The same letter asked the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Okoth Ochola and other relevant commanders to oversee the vetting of officers to be deployed at the unit which is under the Criminal Investigations Directorate, Kibuli.
“By copy of this message, DIGP is to oversee the overhaul (vetting and deployment of personnel) of the LPPU assisted by a committee composed of D/OPS (Director Operations), D/CID, D/CI and COMDT, PSU.”
The IGP gave his senior officers only one week to complete the process.
“This work should be completed in one week and an action report submitted,” the letter concluded.
When contacted on phone, the police spokesman, Asan Kasingye confirmed the development describing it as normal administrative changes.
