Great Lakes Regional University Kanungu in Kanungu district has been closed after students got involved in a violent strike.
The decision by the University administration and police to close the university was reached after angry continuing students and those who completed their courses two years ago stormed the administration block and attempted to destroy it.
Continuing students accuse the university administration of mistreating them and failing to consider their concerns. They are also unhappy with the administration charging them an extra Shs 400, erectile 000 for new IDs with the label of Nkumba University.

The Alumni and continuing students on Tuesday convened at the university premises and demanded an explanation from the university administration about the extra payments.
Nelson Kyomukama Atuheire one of the affected old students says the refusal by the administration to release their academic transcripts denied them a chance of competing for jobs with others.
Ambrose Niwagaba, the University guild president says there are plans by the students to drag the institution to courts of law.
The students who were armed with sticks and stones attempting to destroy the university administration block were dispersed by police, who fired tear gas and bullets in the air.
Later, Bernard Akarambuzi, the University Academic Registrar who was the only administrator at the campus put out a notice from the office of the Vice Chancellor ordering the closure of the University until further notice. The notice also ordered students to have vacated the university premises by 06:00pm.
Dr. George Tumwesigye, the University Vice Chancellor confirmed the closure of the university saying that the administration will first sit to determine when the students will report back.
Dr. Tumwesigye declined to comment on the accusations by continuing and former students and alumni saying that he was in a very important meeting.
The university was founded by Rev. Canon. Dr. Hamlet Kabushenga, the former Kinkizi East Member of Parliament as is affiliated to Nkumba University.
