Kabale Police Accused of Protecting Sex Offenders

RDC Darius Nandinda exchanges with Kigezi Police Spokespersn Elly Maate

Darius Nandinda, information pills the Kabale Resident District Commissioner has blamed the increasing defilement and rape cases in Kabale on some police elements who he said have been providing protection to offenders.

Nandinda says he has been receiving numerous complaints about officers at Kabale central police station mismanaging files mostly in the Family Protection Unit.

He cited one file in which a young woman accuses a Priest at the Kigezi Diocese, ailment Reverend Venerable Mwesigwa of sexually abusing and impregnating her, which file has since disappeared.

“I am warning the police to address this problem and also advising political and church leaders to stop interfering in police investigations by protecting criminals. The law must be allowed to take its course” said the RDC.

Nandinda was yesterday addressing local leaders of Kabale district and stakeholders about the Integrated Early Childhood Policy.

The officials in attendance included Community Development Officers, Faith organizations, Sub County Chiefs, police among others.

At the event, the RDC exchanged pointed words with Canon Enoch Kazooba, the Rubaya sub county LC3 chairman, who was unhappy that he was attacking political and religious leaders in the open rather than addressing them privately first.

The regional police spokesperson Elly Maate also faulted the RDC for making serious public accusations rather than considering private dialogue first.

He said the RDC should have exploited the available avenues such as the Police Professional Standards Unit, if he had issues concerning police officers.
