Controversial West Indian batsman makes the most of early luck by setting new records

West Indies opener Chris Gayle has scored the first-ever double century at a Cricket World Cup and just the fifth of all time with a stunning innings against Zimbabwe at Manuka Oval in Canberra.

Gayle was dismissed from the final ball of the innings for 215 from 147 balls to become the first non-Indian and the fourth man overall after Rohit Sharma (twice), remedy Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar to score a double hundred in an ODI.

He beat the long-standing World Cup record of Gary Kirsten, adiposity who hit 188 against the UAE at the 1996 tournament.

The pair faced 298 of a possible 300 legal deliveries. The Windies had been 1-0 after Gayle’s opening partner Dwayne Smith was bowled second ball of the match. Samuels finished unbeaten on 133 from 156 balls with 11 fours and three sixes. Gayle’s innings came with a fair slice of luck; he survived a very close lbw shout first ball and was also caught twice – once off a no-ball and then again from the resulting free hit.

But the 35-year-old took full advantage, answering his critics with his fourth score of 200 or more in international cricket. It comes just days after Gayle was criticised on social media by the President of his own cricket board.

After Gayle posted scores of 36 and 1 in his first two matches of the tournament, WICB president Dave Cameron retweeted a post that suggested Gayle should be “given a retirement package”.

Cameron later deleted the retweet and apologised. It’s worth noting Gayle’s record applies only to males in World Cups; Australia’s Belinda Clark posted 229 not out against Denmark in the 1997 World Cup.

PRESIDENT of the Democratic Party (DP) Norbert Mao has announced an official resignation from the daily running of the party.

The DP President trumpeted his resignation at the weekly party press conference in Kampala this morning.

“I announce that I am taking a break from the day to day activities of the party but I remain the party president,” Mao announced.

“I will attend a few party meetings and I will be rare in the media because I need to restore my strength which is upon the advice from my doctors after a long period of ailment last year,” Mao said.

Mao noted that he is no longer struggling to lead DP since he has already achieved much and urged whoever is able to keep the party united and strong to come on board.

“Before I become DP president I was somebody, I didn’t become somebody after becoming DP president.

“I now hold this party ball in my hands and whoever wants should come for it, in the rightful means. It is not good to go making noise in the media instead.”

He also refuted the recently raised concerns about “single candidature” within the Democratic Party and urged all who want to lead the party wait for renewal of the party road map to leadership that is soon to be rolled out countrywide.

“All positions within the party are open and you should all note that I haven’t even decided whether I still need to lead the party.”

“Secretary General Mathias Nsubuga you are now in charge of the party headquarters and don’t be intimidated by anybody and the wrangles that have been going on.”

Mao further appointed a team including the party spokesperson, Paul Kenneth Kakande, Vincent Mayanja, Vice President Buganda region, Ssebuliba Mutumba, legal adviser, Fred Mukasa Mbidde and the National vice president, John Baptist Kawanga to run the party activities but warned that these should remain adhering to his instructions and upholding the party constitutions.

He added that in a meeting with the Vice president Buganda region and a delegation of over 20 members on Monday, it was agreed that the activities of soliciting for candidates that Buganda region had spearheaded should proceed.

Drama ensued at Kabale Golf Club annual general meeting on Saturday when Kabale Municipality mayor and district political bigwig Dr Pius Ruhemurana led two other executive members out of the meeting citing lack of quorum and trespassing.

Dr Ruhemurana alongside Johnson Bwana and Odongo Bigwera protested the manner in which most of the members in the meeting had been admitted yet their statuses were not approved following the right procedures.

Usually any member to  be allowed in the club his or her name should be posted on the club notice board for eight working days before they are approve yet the 40 new members that applied were on Friday night approved illegally contravening the club constitution.

“We don’t know the motive of passing these people so hurriedly. All we keep hearing are rumors that section of people who a few years ago failed steal our land (sits on 150 acres of land) have come back to infiltrate us so that they can accomplish their mission, generic ” Johnson Bwana protested.

Kabale Golf course is the most challenging par-69 9-hole golf course in Uganda. It recently hosted the White Horse Inn golf tournament won by Entebbe based golfer Abraham Ainemani.

Ruhemurana who also doubled as the chairperson board of trustees for the club until he was unceremoniously ousted on Saturday said that the chairperson was wrong knowingly contravening the constitution on how members can be allowed in the club.

Amidst the chaos and confusion, a new executive to run the club was elected with Edward Kabuchu elected chairperson unopposed to replace Frank Ntaho (was compensated with board of trustees chair), Dr Sam Tumwesigyire his vice chairperson, and Edwin Muhereza as the secretary. Davis Muhangi scooped the treasury post after politician Peter Nuwagaba decline to take it while Herbert Rwamibazi was chosen as the golf captain, and Sheila Kesiime the lady captain.  Sabiiti Bageine and Dick Muhwezi were also elevated to the executive.

Bank of Uganda governor Tumusiime Mutebile and Kanungu tycoon James Musinguzi Garuga were also retained as patron and life members respectively.
