Counsel Isaac Ssemakadde with the four acussed students in court recently

Buganda Road grade one magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu has released on bail all four Makerere University students who were recently arrested for demonstrating outside court for the release of Dr Stella Nyanzi.

The four students; Edmund Kahigi, doctor Roy Rugumayo, Hanington Mugarura and Stephen Ariho have spent almost two weeks on remand at Luzira prison.

Among their grounds for bail, they told court, was the fact that they are soon commencing their End of Semester exams and have not had enough time to prepare.

Their lawyer Isaac Semakadde also pleaded for a non-cash bail considering that these are unemployed.

The bail was not opposed by the prosecution side which however asked for stringent bail terms.

The magistrate released the suspects on a Shs 10 million non-cash bail while each of their sureties was also placed on a Shs 10 million non-cash bond.

She also had a warning to send out to the suspects; “On Monday when this matter last appeared in court most of you people geared at me because you were not happy with my decisions; we need to respect each regardless of the status.”

The magistrate added, “We as Christians know that the truth will always set us free. When you see us seated in these chairs, we are not gods but miserable sinners too; but it is important that we all respect each other.”

Hearing of this matter commences on 30th May 2017.
