Minister of Internal Affairs Gen Aronda Nyakairima has passed away after a short ailment government has confirmed.

Details of the shocking news were still scanty by publication time.

Unverified reports indicate that Gen. Aronda Nyakairima died on the plane last night while returning from Korea. He reportedly developed a yet to be determined ailment on the plane.

Who is Aronda?

The 56 year old UPDF has been serving in the Cabinet of Uganda as Minister of Internal Affairs since 2013.

Previously he was Chief of Defense Forces, viagra dosage the highest military rank in the Uganda People’s Defense Force, from 2003 to 2013.

Nyakairima was born in Rukungiri District. He attended Kitgum High School in Kitgum District.

He joined Makerere University in 1978, graduating in 1981, with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in political science.

He attended the Basic Officers Course in 1989, after the NRA had captured power in Kampala, Uganda’s capital city. He later attended a course in Strategic Studies at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas, USA. He also has further military qualifications from the Egyptian Military Academy in Cairo.

Military career

He joined the National Resistance Army in 1982, soon after leaving Makerere. After the NRA captured power, he worked as an intelligence officer in the Ugandan military.

He later was appointed Assistant Director in the Directorate of Military Intelligence in the Uganda People’s Defense Force (UPDF).

He was then transferred to the Presidential Protection Unit as an Intelligence Officer.

From there, he served as the Commanding Officer of the Armored Brigade before his appointment as Commander of the UPDF in 2003. He has represented the UPDF in the Ugandan Parliament since 1996.

Seedstars world revealed that 11 startups were invited to compete and the regional winner, intershipUg pitch, was selected the best startup in Uganda.

The regional winner will be going to Switzerland in February 2016 for the final pitching round, potentially winning the USD 500,000 equity investment.

The 11 startups pitched in front of a prestigious jury consisting of Kevin Wingfield, Head of Personal and Business Banking at Stanbic Bank Uganda, Richard Zulu, Founder & Lead at Outbox Hub, Stone Atwine, CEO & Co-Founder at Remit.ug,Davis Baasha, Director at Finafrica, Global Partnerships & Commercialization Strategy and Marcello Schermer, Regional Manager for Africa at Seedstars World

IntershipUg was named Uganda’s best startup for its in international logistics solution.

Nielsimms Sangho, the co-founder and CEO of IntershipUg said, ”There have been gaps in meeting the needs of SME’s and individuals who need to ship goods into the country and it is on the basis of this that we developed a solution that will enable us act as a middleman for SME’s and individuals.”

Wizarts Media came second while Safe Boda, an app that helps users pick safe bodaboda riders came in third position.

The top three startups are walking away with a host of free software tools, one year of mentoring on brand strategy and PR by Corporate Image as well as three months of free keywords on shortcode provided by Africa’s Talking.

Speaking about the firm’s partnership with Seedstars Kampala, Corporate Image MD, Muhereza Kyamutetera said, “Statistics have shown that many Ugandan startups don’t live to celebrate their 1st birthday. Corporate Image is committed to developing innovative and sustainable business solutions that will help the top 3 startups market their services and build brands that are able to compete on the national and international stage.”

The other startups who were invited to pitch were Exact and Clear, an innovative software product which can produce voice output after scanning printed text on objects like papers, Yoza -a location based laundry service app that connects people who offer laundry services with people looking to do their dirty laundry and Commonsense app, an app that challenges the user by asking common sense questions and awards points for correct answers.

Seedstars Kampala also featured Kevin Wingfield, Head of Personal and Business Banking at Stanbic Bank Uganda, who introduced the entrepreneurs into the world of funding and announced a program to help entrepreneurs get easier access to more affordable funding.

The local Ambassador of Seedstars World, Solomon Opio of Outbox Hub organized the event with Seedstars World’s local partners Googlr for entreprenuers, Corporate Image, Africa’s talking and many more.

Continuing on its world tour of startup scenes in emerging markets and fast-growing startup scenes, Seedstars World’s next stop is Nairobi where the event will be hosted at iHub to select the best startup in Kenya.

Seedstars World is looking for smart startups that solve regional issues and/or develop profitable products for the global market.
