ChimpReports has extensively unearthed the developments that resulted to the return of Amum back to the ruling party’s top position from which he was fired by the Chairman also President, Salva Kiir at the beginning of the SPLM crisis.
After the December 15 breakout of violence, unlike Dr. Machar who fled to Jonglei state, Amum was immediately put under house arrest in the Capital Juba and later detained at the National Security headquarters.
Amum and other 10 SPLM figures, mainly former ministers who were considered by the Juba regime to be behind the alleged foiled coup d’état, were only released after exhaustive negotiations by the Kenyan government under the direct involvement of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
They were released on condition that they wouldn’t remain in the restive nation but be exiled in Kenya.
Amum and his team didn’t join Dr. Machar’s rebel movement but formed their own splinter group known as SPLM-G10 (Group 10 which is also referred to as SPLM- Uhuru due to the Kenyatta’s efforts).s
Recently, the group (SPLM-G10) agreed with the government to return to the country basing on the 27th January deal in Arusha known as the SPLM Unification Agreement.
He finally landed at Juba International Airport on Monday, accompanied by the Kenyan Defense minister after spending a solid one year in exile.
He met with President Kiir who is also the Chairman of the ruling SPLM splinter group.
On Saturday last week, SPLM-G10 delegation including former Finance minister, Kosti Manibe who was also by fate sacked together with Amum in April 2013 before a Presidential Decree that dissolved the whole government in June 2013, was in Juba with Kenyan Foreign Affairs minister Mohamed Amina.
The delegation which also included other group members; John Luk, Deng Alor and Chol Tong met with the President and according to sources, the reconciliatory Kiir assured them of fully support as they soon as they return to work.
The Surprise Return to SPLM SG
ChimpReports has exclusively learnt that upon returning to Juba on Monday, the ruling party’s highest decisive organ, SPLM Liberation Council had an extraordinary convention with the single agenda of finding a way to restore Amum to his Secretary Genral position.
The special meeting that sat at J1, capital Juba primarily wanted a technique of bringing Amum and his SPLM-G10 back to mainstream SPLM under Kiir.
The Liberation Council unanimously agreed that Amum who was kicked out of SG job for mismanaging the party administratively and politically, be reinstated to his position to dwindle the capacity of the SPLA-IO which is militarily facing the government.
“The Council (SPLM Liberation) has agreed that we bury everything and let our former SG (Amum) return to his office,” said an anonymous source at the party chairman’s office in Juba.
Amum finally took Oath on Tuesday, returning to his job.
The ceremony was presided over by President Kiir and conducted by presidential Legal Advisor, Lawrence Korbandy.
