Kipsiro Now Eyes Olympics Gold
Moses Kipsiro’s astonishing performance at Wednesday’s Olympics ended weeks of heartache, with Ugandans taking to Twitter to express their joy.
The Ugandan athlete finished 7th in his heat to make it to Saturday's Olympics 5000m final while Abraham Kiplimo trailed in the 15th position and Geoffrey Kusuro came 19th.
Kipsiro was among athletes with the best 5 times who qualified for the final.
This magnificent triumph enables Kipsiro to move a step forward in clinching a record-breaking gold medal on Saturday.
Kipsiro was on his feet punching the air in delight, considering he had ended weeks of hurt for Ugandans after the country’s athlete’s heartbreaking performance at the 2012 Olympics.
The Peal of Africa last scooped an Olympic medal in 1996 when quarter miler Davis Kamoga got bronze.
John Akii-Bua also won gold in the 400m hurdles at the 1972 games.
Uganda today expected disaster as Kipsiro was the “last man standing.”
Quite the opposite, as he rose superbly to the challenge with a stunning score of 13:17.68, far better than Heat 1 star Azerbaijan's Ibrahimov Hayle’s 13:25.23.
That surely got the party started and afterwards delighted Ugandans Tweeted their good wishes.
Raymond Baikal tweeted: Thank you #Moses #Kipsiro for making #Uganda proud.
Maurice Mugisha: “Confirmed total #Ugandan be for us and not against us, we need amedal badly and he #KIPSIRO is our only hope!”
Sheila Nduhukire also tweeted: It is so hard being #Kipsiro now! When the whole nation has its eyes on you.- A nation that has not done enough to support you! #Ug #Olympics.
