Uganda coach Bobby Williamson is a relieved man after not losing any of the three crucial games this month.
Following a 3-1 defeat away in Congo Brazzaville in the first round in February, the Scot was left with a herculean task as he faced Angola and Senegal in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers before looking to overturn the deficit against the Red Devils – all in the first three weeks of June.
The loss of Ibrahim Sekagya, David Obua and Nestroy Kizito to retirement had already left the Cranes vulnerable and few doubted Bobby’s side would end June intact.
But they went on to draw one-all away in Angola and against Senegal in Kampala before resoundingly thumping Congo to book a slot in the final round of the qualifiers to the Nations Cup to be held in South Africa next year.
“It was crazy, games coming in thick and fast in a space of three weeks,” Bobby told SuperSport.com.
“We had to be strong mentally and prepare well. I’m glad we picked a crucial point in Angola and never lost to a very good Senegal side.”
“They (Senegal) are the best I’ve faced, and that was without Demba Ba. But we kept our heads up and managed to keep a point.”
“In the end we beat Congo with a very good performance and I’m relieved we came through the tough fixtures unscathed. Now wait for the draws and hope for the best.”
The final round of the qualifiers will be played September 7-9 and October 12-14, with draws due in the first week of July.
