Express are the new Bell Super League champions after ending 16 years of waiting with a 2-1 victory over Bidco at Namboole on Sunday.
The Red Eagles’ win was complemented by Bunnamwaya’s 1-0 victory over URA as Express won the title with 54 points.
The victors finished second on 53 and the tax collectors third on 51.
Yayo Lutimba scored all the title winning goals in either half for Express before Herbert Odipio pulled one back to set up a nervy ending for the eventual champions.
Sam Ssimbwa will be credited for having turned a hopeless side that was collecting young players from lower leagues having lost over 10 footballers to other top sides.
Express needed to win their game and hope for a draw or Bunnamwaya victory over URA in Buikwe and they got just that.
But it didn’t come that early as Okhuti won it late for Bunnamwaya at the time Express were leaving dangerously on a 2-1 score line.
Lutimba put Express ahead on ten minutes from the spot after the referee adjudged a touch on Erisa Ssekisambu in the box to have been enough for a penalty.
He doubled the advantage when he sent Mulindwa Kawooya the wrong way on 50 minutes as emotions ran high in the other game in Buikwe.
Bunnamwaya had turned the tide, taking the game to last hitherto champions URA, who had enjoyed a better first half.
Express sensed more purpose at Namboole, going all out in the second half as they pounded box in quick succession but only for a stubborn Kawooya in goal.
