Police today deployed heavily at Kololo Ceremonial grounds where walk to work activists were to hold a political rally.
A security officer from State House told a group of A4C leaders near the venue that the President’s office had not authorised the activity.
The officer further revealed that A4C’s communication to the President’s office was delivered at a late hour and therefore the request could not be considered on time.
There was a reported scuffle between opposition activists and police near the venue.
A4C intended to use the grounds, which are under supervision of President’s office, as the last rally of walk to work activity to buttress their demands for immediate measures to control the rising cost of living.
President Yoweri Museveni says the economy is not in a crisis but facing low levels of production to match the rising demand of goods and services.
However, opposition insist for falling short of controlling inflation, government is subjecting Ugandans to unbearable prices of goods especially foodstuffs.
Walk to work phase II started Monday with police placing opposition chief Col. Kizza Besigye under house arrest, on grounds he would incite violence once freed.
Besigye’s lawyer Ladislaus Rwakafuzi says it’s unconstitutional to deny his client his right of movement basing on colonial laws.
