Plain textS. Sudan Remembers Dr Garang
People across the ten states of the Republic of South Sudan on Monday marked the seventh Martyrs Day with the President of the Republic calling for support for the widows and orphans of the liberation struggle.

Addressing thousands of people who gathered at the Dr. Garang Mausoleum for national celebrations in Juba, President Salva Kiir Mayardit said the responsibility of orphans and widows rests in the hands of every South Sudanese who has lived to see the independence of the Republic of South Sudan.
“It is the responsibility of everyone here to look into the welfare of our widows and orphans”, appealed President Kiir.
He explained that the government underscored the need to cater for the widows and orphans of Africa’s longest civil war by establishing an independent commission during the interim period to address the issues affecting the widows, orphans and war disabled.
He added that without the ultimate sacrifices of the martyrs, the realization of South Sudan’s independence would have not been possible.
“We are here today because our sisters and brothers have sacrificed their lives for the freedom of this country. We must remember them every day”, he said.
President Kiir called on the people to remain united in the face of challenges that the young country is going through.
“We have come a long way to be here today. The fight is still far from over. We still have a lot of challenges,” the President noted.
“A lot of progress has been made and continues to be made. However the challenges are immense. We will continue to stand with you as we have done in the past,” said Busho Ndinyeka, Uganda’s Ambassador to the Republic of South Sudan.
Ambassador Ndinyeka who presented on behalf of the four neighbouring countries of Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea and his own country Uganda underscored the unwavering support to the baby country of Africa.
Meanwhile Professor Lado Breng who represented the governor of Central Equatoria state Mr. Clement Wani Konga revealed that three shops in Juba have been donated by the government of Central Equatoria to the widows of the struggle.
July 30th has been set aside for all the people across South Sudan to reflect and appreciate the people who sacrificed their own lives for the liberation of the country.
It is also the day the founding father of the Sudan People Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) Dr. John Garang de Mabior died in a plane crash.
