Lwengo Bus Accident Victims Identified
5:43pm: Police have identified some of the people who perished in a fatal accident in Rwengo in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
Lwengo District Police commander Assy Mukundane told Chimpreports that the bodies of the deceased have been moved to a mortuary at the area Health Centre IV while survivors were rushed to referral hospitals in Masaka, Lyantonde and Kyazanga.
The deceased, according to Mukundane, include Harriet Safari and Julius Mugisha.
Others are Ivan Twesigye and a one Bob, all employees of Horizon Buses Company.
This website has separately identified other passengers who perished in the deadly accident as Peter Sekandi, a sales Executive at Victoria Motors in Kampala; Enos Sabiti of Kirundu Sub county, Kisoro and Bazil Mukasa a resident of Kitagwenda district in western Uganda.
Mukundane said 11 survivors have been admitted in Lyantonde, 18 in Kyazanga and 15 at Masaka referral hospitals.
“Some of the passengers sustained minor injuries and are likely to recover. But I saw a woman whose stomach was shattered and intestines were hanging outside her body. Her baby is now on life support,” said Mukundane.
The Police officer attributed the accident to reckless driving, adding the tarmac is so “smooth which has encouraged over speeding.”
He also said most bodies are yet to be identified, considering that “they were burnt beyond recognition.”
12:00PM: More details coming in indicate that the Rwengo bus accident death toll has shot to 30.
Police officials say 16 passengers who sustained severe injuries from the tragedy lost their lives before and shortly after being admitted at several hospitals in the area.
Eyewitnesses say the bus rolled several times times before landing like a thud and bursting into flames.
10:10 AM: At least 14 people have been confirmed dead in a fatal road accident along Mbarara-Kampala road, Chimpreports has established.According to a brief police statement issued Tuesday morning, the accident occurred today at 2:30am at Malongo, Kyazanga in Rwengo district.
Mugisha, the driver of a speeding Isuzu brand Kampala-bound bus, registration number UAM 937B, reportedly lost control as he tried to negotiate a corner along Katovu, Kyazanga before the vehicle over turned several times.
14 died on the spot while 45 other injured passengers were rushed to hospitals of Lyantonde, Kyazanga Health Center 4 and Masaka.
Police blamed the driver for reckless driving.
The identities of the deceased and the injured are yet to be revealed.
The bus belongs to the Horizon Bus Company.
It’s said the bus caught fire as it rolled before bursting into flames, fracturing passengers’ legs and arms.
This could be the deadliest bus accident in recent years.
