Just a day after handing over office, outgoing Makerere University’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Venansius Baryamureeba, has started his own University.
Based at the Tweed Towers in Nakasero, Kampala, Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) will be awarding international degrees.
Baryamureeba told his aides last week after losing the hotly contested and politicized Vice Chancellor race that he “moves forward not backwards.”
Baryamureeba last Friday resigned from his academic job to pursue a career in Information Technology and Computer Science in the private sector.
In a letter to the University’s Secretary of the appointments Board Baryamureeba noted: “Just like in outside Universities, I would like after these many years of consecutive service in the University to take a break from University Service.”
Baryamureeba diligently served Makerere for 17 years where he is credited for turning around a troubled institution into a globally reputed centre of academic excellence especially in the field of ICT.
Baryamureeba argued that he intended to spend “two years working in the private sector” before he could fully revert to full time academic work at the campus.
During this period, Baryamureeba promised “to publish at least two books in the next two years.”
Latest information indicates that UTAMU is set to partner with several Universities in United States, Britain, India among others.
Baryamureeba’s aides have told Chimpreports that several donor groups have promised to fund UTAMU’s projects that will the institution erect its own structures in the near future.
UTAMU will mainly focus on Information Technology, Computer Science and other science related courses.
Baryamureeba handed over office to his successor Prof. John Ddumba Sentamu on Thursday at a function presided over by Chancellor Mondo Kagonyera.
