“Yes, we have him but I will give you more information later,” Mugenyi told Chimpreports.com news desk on Wednesday afternoon.

Pressed for details on when, where and how Kwitonda was nailed, Mugenyi said: “You people of Chimpreports are too thirsty. I know you like breaking news but please wait so that I first interview this man.”

Detectives said Kwitonda was picked by a police intelligence squad from Rwenzori Towers, Nakasero Road after days of surveillance. He was then bumped on a pickup truck before being rushed to Special investigations Unit (SIU) headquarters in Kireka.

Kwitonda fled Rwanda in 2001 after he was fired from the Defence Investigators committee at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) in Arusha.

This came against the backdrop of revelations that some investigators at Arusha had actually participated in the 1994 genocide.

Kwitonda was an investigator for the Defence in the case of Arsene Shalom Ntahobali, a former leader in the Interhamwe militia.

In a statement issued on July 16, ICTR said: “Mr. Kwitonda’s contract will expire on 8 August.  His contract has been suspended because he is currently under investigation by the Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda for crimes allegedly committed during the 1994 genocide.”

Sources told this news website that Kwitonda’s arrest had taken long simply because he was bribing some police officials.

“Many security guys were getting millions of shillings from him. His arrest could have been a result of disagreements between security men on sharing his bribes,” the source said.

He has since been a resident of Kasubi, a Kampala suburb.
