By-election: Gen. Kayihura Issues Threats As Tension Grips Ishaka
Security has been tightened in Ishaka-Bushenyi Municipality, with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Lt. Gen. Kale Kayihura warning on B.Fm Radio Station that what happened “in Jinja East by-elections will not happen again here.”
The opposition FDC candidate Paul Mwiru floored NRM flag bearer Nathan Igeme Nabeta in the recent violent Jinja by-elections.
The statement has been construed to mean that Kayihura would now allow FDC trounce the ruling party’s candidate.
Flanked by the area returning officer only identified as Babra and regional Police Commander Kulayigye, Kayihura also told radio listeners at 2pm that whoever tries to mess up the polls will be arrested.
FDC’s Odo Tayebwa is facing a well-funded Nasser Basajjabalaba, brother to controversial city tycoon Hassan Basajjabalaba.
The mood is tense with fears of possible violence very high.
“Tension is simmering. We are expecting the worst. The deployment of a sea of police officers has created a fertile ground for conflict. Police is trying to intimidate Odo’s supporters and dampening their morale in protecting FDC’s votes from being rigged by NRM candidates,” said an opposition member in Ishaka town.
This website understands that the massive deployment and operations of heavily-armed police personnel in the municipality are being coordinated by AIGP Grace Turyagumanawe.
It’s yet unclear why police have blocked all roads leading to FDC Bushenyi Chairman William Mukaira’s residence near Valley Inn.
Speaking to Chimpreports.com in a telephone interview, FDC Youth member Francis Mwijukye said several arrests have been carried out in some areas ahead of Wednesday’s polls.
FDC Iron-lady Ingrid Turinawe is also in Ishaka drumming up support for Odo.
President Yoweri Museveni on Monday stormed the municipality where he urged locals to vote Nasser, whose election was lately nullified over bribery of voters.
The Court of Appeal ordered fresh elections.
The race is too tight for observers to determine who will sail through as Ishaka’s legislator.
