The leading contenders are FDC’s Odo Tayebwa and NRM flag bearer Nasser Basajjabalaba, the brother to city tycoon Hassan Basajjabalaba.

Nasser’s 2011 election victory was recently overturned by the Court of Appeal over bribery.

Sources say the campaigns would be graced by top shots from all political camps to drum up support for their candidates.

The latest from FDC indicates Col. Kizza Besigye will soon lead a high-powered delegation to Ishaka to woo support for Tayebwa.

In February, FDC’s top shots Alice Alaso, Mugisha Muntu and Michael Kabaziguruka among others pitched camp in Jinja East where they managed to uproot NRM strongman Nathan Nabeta thus paving way for Paul Mwiru’s victory.

“We (FDC) are sending a serious team for campaigns and vote protection as we did in Jinja East. Nasser will be defeated,” said a source at FDC, who preferred anonymity as she is not allowed to speak freely to the media.

Already, NRM MPs including Theodore Ssekikuubo, Karooro Okurut and Michael Mawanda have already visited the area to campaign for Nasser.

Observers say the Ishaka battlefield will determine FDC’s ability to capture the hometown of one of its top leaders and former Education Minister Amanya Mushega.
