Accompanied by Col. Bitumbika and Maj. Bernard Tugume, Kankiriho discussed with his Rwandan counterparts methods of putting an end to illegal cross border trade and immigration.

During his stay, Kankiriho, who is the 2nd Division commander, held meetings with Maj. Gen. Alexis Kagame, the head of RDF 2nd Division based in the Northern Province.

Flanked by Col. John Gashayija, Col. Evariste Murenzi, Col. Karegeya and Lt. Col. James Burabyo, Gen. Kagame said the meeting held at Byumba Town in Gicumbi District was aimed at assessing the security situation at the border between the two countries.

“We have found out that some citizens on both sides still use illegal ways to cross the border. We intend to work together to solve this problem,” said Kagame.

Kankiriho, according to Igihe.com, said the cooperation between Uganda and Rwanda is very excellent compared to other East African neighbors.

The officers further discussed the Congo security crisis that has triggered massive exodus of refugees into both countries.

Fighting between rebels loyal to warlord John Bosco Ntaganda and DRC forces has left hundreds dead and thousands homeless.

The military officials, Chimpreports.com has learned, also discussed the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) threat.

The rebels are reportedly carrying out drills in Nandui, Eastern Congo with the view of attacking western Uganda.

It’s highly feared the rebels could attempt to use illegal border routes to sneak into Uganda.

Hailed for executing a successful disarmament policy in Karamoja and commanding operations against LRA in Northern Uganda and Garamba, Kankiriho replaced Brig. Kidega as 2nd Division commander to take care of the ADF threat.

The Military officials later visited a Genocide memorial site at Gisozi to pay tribute to victims of the 1994 genocide against ethnic Tutsi.
